Bowling for dullards

Besides being Bloomsday, yesterday was my homegirl Teresa’s birthday. A whole big gang of us met up at Jose’s for margs and guac and carne asada and mole and such. (The placemats, which Teresa said must have been designed by the same company that makes those Chinese Zodiac ones, gave helpful translations for such foreign terms as “taco,” “senorita,” and “chile.”) For most of the meal, we had the entire upstairs to ourselves; it didn’t last, though — a boisterous gang of young 20-somethings took over a huge table, commandeered a remote to the huge-screen tv, and started flipping through the channels trying to find the Sox game. Luckily, we’d pretty much finished gorging save for a few sopapilla crumbs.

After dinner, we went to Lanes & Games, a seedy bowling alley in North Cambridge (right next to the spooky abandoned ’80s disco, “Faces”). It’s one of the few big-ball (as opposed to candlepin) alleys in these parts, and since Massachusetts lifted one of its many inane blue laws, you can enjoy a beer down by the lanes, not just in the “lounge.” I truly suck at bowling — I managed an 80 and and 81 in the two games we played — but as Teresa puts it, “It’s good, clean fun.” We didn’t get home till nigh midnight, and I’m paying the price today. We’ll see how how I fare during the 3 hours of meetings scheduled this afternoon.

Teresa loved the felted marsupial bag, and Sam and Grace couldn’t believed I’d made it. Here’s a pic before felting:

And after:

It took three full hot wash/cold rinse cycles to get it to shrink and felt enough, but it was incredibly exciting to see it transformed. While it was damp, I blocked it on a cardboard box to give it a nice shape and stretched the handles out significantly. Can’t wait to make one of my own!

That is so cool. I’d never even thought of felting someting that was knitted… or crocheted?
