OK, that was weird

I was sitting here at the computer, cozily drinking coffee and eating some Chex Mix (enhanced by dumping some peanuts into the bag — curses, peanut allergies, for depriving those of us untouched by your evil!) while the BBC programme “Talking Point” streams through the speakers D. lent me when my testicular-looking iMac speakers died. Some staid conversation about WMDs and British Intelligence. Out of the blue, a jaunty little waltz began to play beneath the interview. The waltz continued for about 40 seconds or so, long enough that it sounded like intentional commentary on the discussion: Really, now, this situation in Irahq can’t be as bad all that! Have a cuppa and listen to some light chamber music to soothe your post-millenial Weltschmerz!

Chex Mix! A little taste of heaven on earth. Whenever Chex is/are on sale at the grocery, we buy 1 box each corn, rice and wheat (rice is less perfect, but it’s required for proper Chex Mix) and make up a batch according to package directions, except we use only Chex cereal and whole cashews and/or pecan halves. None of this bagel chip nonsense. We do not skimp on the butter, though I respect those who do.

The stuff in the bag that you can buy at the convenience store is just fine, and not everyone can justify having 3 open boxes of Chex in the cupboard. You may have the peanuts, Amy. Andy enjoys them too.

Speaking of the radio, I solved the Weekend Edition Sunday puzzle in under 30 seconds this morning. I am so flippin proud of myself that I actually e-mailed my entry in to WESun, a first. Perhaps I will be on the radio with effevescent LeeAnn next Sunday.

There’s something so . . . wan about packaged Chex Mix. My mom used to make it with lots of Worcestershire sauce, which is probably what I miss most. But yeah — all that cricker-cracker-pretzel nonsense does get in the way. Didn’t there used to be Rye Chex? Or am I living in a grainy daydream?

Perhaps I will be on the radio with effevescent LeeAnn next Sunday.

That would be phenomenal! I have a particular fondness for Will Shortz, who devised his own major in Cryptology or some such at my alma mater, Indianer U. I love the Sunday puzzle, too — LeeAnn is so sweetly encouraging to the nervous contestants.

Time to prep some green beans and grape tomatoes for dinner!
