Saturday morning

Me: So, what would you like to do today?

Him: I don’t know. I need to go to the bank, but that’s about it. What do you want to do? Watch some “Lost”? Overthrow a South American government?

Me: “Lost” sound okay. But I don’t feel the need to overthrow any South American governments today.

Him: Well, you’ll never make director of the CIA with that attitude.

Dude, we need to talk about LOST. I recently watched season one on DVD, and none of my real-life friends is into it. Question: who’s your favorite character? I love Locke, he is complex. And Hurley, who isn’t.

Yeah, we just finished disc 5 of season 1, and I’m kinda panting for the next disc but I’m also pretty sure that it’s probably going to serve up one heck of a cliffhanger. The series has sucked me in, kind of against my will. I will never stop mimicing the heavy-handed waaAAAAHHH-WRRRuhhhh Trombones of Doooom that accompany any plot point of significance, and Kate’s two expressions (Look down and aside — I’m sad and pensive! Look at a guy and aside — I’m pensive and flirty!) make me want to do her harm. But the premise is interesting and I like all the weird filigrees, references to “Office Space” and “The Office,” and when the beachside montage sputtered out with Hurley’s CD player batteries (and ended his bad taste in music, thankfully). The whole Locke and Rousseau thing is cute. I want to know how they make those tiki torches burn so reliably. Etc.

Oops, I didn’t really answer your question. I think Hurley is my favorite character, maybe because I feel bad that he’s so often portrayed as cartoony, even in his own flashback episode.

    Kate’s two expressions
Word. Can’t stand that character–probably the most fictional-seeming character on the show, next to, Dr Shepard (Shepard! Christ-like figure! I get it already!)

Hah! Me, I keep getting confused when someone says Charlie’s name — I expect it to be Matthew Fox, so ingrained is Party of Five in my sorry consciousness.

I think she’s kinda funny-looking, but the Australian girl Claire is beautiful.

Neither Claire nor Kate has anything on Our Paula. Rrroowwwr!

Shepard Christ-like? I guess it could be argued Christ had a major problem with anger and control issues, and comes off as a sanctimonious jerk when he’s either feeling his oats or not getting his way. To me, the writers have done a great job of avoiding Jack-as-noble-hero or even Jack-as-noble-flawed-hero plotting. And I think everyone but Flasshe is giving extremely short shrift to Evangeline Lily, to such an extent that I am wondering if we are watching the same show. I think she does a great job with the part - c’mon, she has at least three facial expressions! Seriously, I think the character is interesting and that Evangeline rocks the role, though feel free to suspect that my true reason for liking her is the same as Flasshe’s stated one. :-) I am also beginning to think that pretty people must be automaticaly suspect, since the criticisms seem to light on the two most conventionally attractive cast members. To me, the show seems far more cloying when it plays the “loveable underdog!” cards of Hurley and Charlie.

    Wow, blushes and back atcha!

Ah, except that I just said I like Claire, and think she is more conventionally attractive than Kate. And the Korean guy is one of my favorite characters because he is so complex–and the actor who plays him is h-o-t-t. And I’ve also gone on record (not here, but in present company) that I think Naveen Andrews is the smokin’-est guy on TV.

What irks me about Kate and Jack is that they are such…TV characters. There is no such thing as a Kate in real life–the sturdy, beautiful outlaw with a heart of gold. But there is definitely such thing as a Locke, a Hurley, a Charlie, a Claire, a Sun, etc.

I would quibble with that, especially re: Locke. He seems like a really invented character to me - the Man of Faith created to be a foil to Jack’s Man of Science. His actions seems a bit contrived at times. (Although I do like the character and think he’s necessary.)

But you’re somewhat right about Jack, which I think is bolstered by the fact he was originally supposed to be killed in the pilot.

Kate, on the other hand, is hot.

Yeah, I was amused to find that out–even the creators of the show found this guy a little too good to be true.

Hey, question for the vets: do we ever find out what happened to his marriage?

Not so far. I bet they’re saving that for later this season. Or for Season 3.
