That way, you can just copy everything back on to a new one. My 1st-gen 20 GB bit the dust last month (dead hard drive), after many revival attempts, including battery swapping. I haven't gotten rid of it yet, even though I got a new one. Sentimental reasons. Nobody really tells you this, but you shold back up your iPod on your hard drive if you have the room.
